Meet Ella Walker from Etikette Candles
Type of products I sell:
Hand poured soy wax candles inspired by South Australia! The current Etikette range includes nine food based fragrances named after my favourite places in SA: Eyre, Fleurieu, Yorke, Morialta, Heysen, Kuitpo, Seacliff, Willunga and Lobethal.
Job / day to day tasks:
A typical day starts at 9pm the night before, when I put wax on the boil to melt overnight. Candle making is a multi-step process including melting the wax to temperature, adding a mix of essential fragrance oils, cooling, pouring and setting the candles as well as wicking, labeling, quality controlling - and cleaning up a lot of rogue wax! I find the making part really therapeutic, but I also love the creative marketing side, finding new and beautiful ways to capture and share the candles. It’s an interesting challenge to try and do justice to a predominantly scent based product online. Someone needs to invent Smellagram!
What inspired me to start my business?
I love the authenticity of maker made products and the challenge of running and growing a small business. What started out as a small side hobby has grown into an exciting business with a really loyal and inspiring customer base.
My top 3 favourite products are:
I feel like I’m constantly changing my mind about which fragrance is my current favourite, but the three that always stand-out are:
- WILLUNGA in Summer Fig and Guava because it’s so light and summery.
- FLEURIEU in Orange and Vanilla.
- The new Christmas fragrance, LOBETHAL in Figgy Pudding which is a beautifully nostalgic blend of fruit, pudding and a hint of brandy sauce.
Why did I choose to operate in South Australia?
I’ve been really lucky to trail and test a few business ideas in South Australia and am always encouraged by the hometown support. SA is a brilliant place to create and build business.
In ten years time I hope to be…
Putting the finishing touches on our latest release range, collaborating with innovative makers and creators and taking Etikette (and SA) to the world.
